I have listened to many stories of Robert E. Lee in the first 65 years of my life. I’ve rewritten two books for other authors. He and Stonewall Jackson were as real to me as an elder brother would have been. It seems to me a shame his stories are no longer appreciated, are even reviled. There is much to admire in his life, and much to learn about his tactics.
But I have always thought that when he was court marshaled he should have resigned. His loyalty to the South was called into serious question because he did not own enough slaves? I wanted to hear him say, “No, no Congressman. My boys are fighting for states Rights.”
But he ducked his head and trudged on.
There is an abundance of brilliant pictures in this history.
