Latter-day Saints have volunteered to turn their lives over to learning more about their Heavenly Father, approaching him through the conduit of the Holy Ghost working in congruence with the mind and will of Jesus Christ in order to perform work for the Kingdom of God. There is no greater joy  Being thus yoked with Jesus Christ we begin our learning experience by performing work projects, work projects that are more worrisome than a final exam of high school level difficulty. When we are working for the Lord, it MUST be good!

But manual labor projects are only s small venue of the educational opportunities that will open up for the mind to work on. When I joined the Church in 1976 I could NOT keep my own checkbook straight. I had no clue on how bookkeeping kept working. Then the opportunity was thrust upon me to untangle 7 years of NO bookkeeping of a ward’s checking account. “Here’s the checkbook, Here are the receipts, Here are the weekly deposits, and here is the book telling how to make this work And here is the phone number of the stake clerk. There were 7 accounts inside the major account, each one with varying deposits with spenders that could not add or subtract any better than I could.

I started with 2+2=4. I started that simple and rooted out all those times 2+2=5 or 6. Gradually I came closer and closer, but every time I came REAL close, a new way of counting came down from the stake. START HERE, do not pass go! And there came a day when all the 2s and 3s and all the way 244 + 768 balanced ALL THE WAY BACK PAST THE DAY THE PREVIOUS CLERK HAD THROWN UP HIS HANDS AND WALKED OUT!

And then the Church introduced us to its new and improved, computerized financial system AND the MIS for members. Once I understood that, I could keep everything straight and have time to play white water canoeing again. When one member challenged his annual contribution he withdrew his challenge when he saw we kept each donation slip, but I said, “Oh no. there must be a mistake somewhere so let’s find it.”

I began with the premise he had the ability to add 2+2 and insist on 4 being the right answer. “Okay, how much are we off?” $17. “All right, flip through these slips for one that adds up to $17.00.”

We found the slip, noted the day and the month it had been turned in. We went straight to it. “You’re right! I made a mistake and added it to your mother’s account. That auto-filling app slipped one over on me.” I showed him the money had not disappeared, That very day it had been added to his mother’s account. There was no slip for her account that day. That was what had happened. He could see it, and I could correct it instantly. “These computers are wonderful.” He marveled at the beauty and today HE is the clerk for that ward. Now THAT is the way Learning should take place. I sure miss that job.
