I have never been self-reliant, but I am much closer than when I began to raise a family. As a born again failure I was turned inside out and started again to grow forward with the idea that God was my Greatest  Resource. Why that is a wonderful meme!

At first, it was easy and wonderful. But it was such a long walk to the chapel. We diverted some of my earnings in order to buy bicycles for all those old enough and back seats for the two who weren’t.  One trip was enough to convince me we had made a wonderful decision that we weren’t strong enough to use safely.   It isn’t enough to have a garden, that garden must sustain you, give you pleasure and serve as an example to your family.

One year everything I planted turned brown except my strawberries. As it so happened one of my daughters developed a taste for strawberries. She ate every strawberry that ripened. Then she began eating strawberries before they turned ripe, then she began eating them when they were decidedly GREEN.  This was too much. We were concerned she might become ill, so we bought a great bunch of luscious strawberries from the supermarket. She took one bite and made a face. “These aren’t real,” she said and went back to our garden for real strawberries. She is about to become a grandmother and she has had a hard time of raising her children alone, but by golly, she has at least tried to teach self-reliance to her children by her steady example.

“Didn’t you ask God if purchasing new bicycles for everyone was a good idea?” asked our home teachers.

Well, no we had not. But we had talked it over as a family, you know, it is important to talk things over as a family? Riding ten miles to the chapel sounded good to us. Yes, but did you ask of God if it was a good idea to be bicycling 10 miles in 114F every day weather? Uh, no. If God is your greatest resource, you are not using Him very wisely.

Asking of God proved to be a great stumbling block to me as a new member. How many questions did I get to ask per month? As many as I needed help with? Do you mean I can have 100 questions per day? I don’t want to bother God THAT much! Okay, I’m supposed to gain wisdom from my many questions and then I won’t need to trouble Him that much?

Oh Boy, I needed a lot of wisdom.

You may never be of my faith, but I invite you to learn the basics of preparedness.
